Composites: Slivers / Openings / Glimpses

“Sliver = a piece cut or split off . . . a splinter, shiver, slice (also fig.)” (from the O.E.D.). I became drawn to this juxtaposing of two ways of seeing. Initially I called them slivers, but also considered “glimpses” or “openings”. I like the combination of the abstract and representational, and the sense of seeing at two different scales. Perhaps I am trying to have my cake and eat it. Why consign collage/cut-up to an apparently lost modernism? Isn’t it more relevant than ever? I like that “shiver, slice (also figurative)”.

Three painting were selected by Ossian Ward, Time Out’s art critic, for the Discerning Eye exhibition at the Mall Galleries in 2012.
